Thirty-One.



Tlahn led Merle in through the door, then bowed and withdrew. Merle stepped up quietly behind Xaa, and waited for him to notice her. For a long while, he didn't. He simply knelt by Johm'rouh, hugging and nuzzling her gently.



"I have done it, my darling. I killed D'Larith. His body lies outside the castle walls. The murderer of your mother lies on the snow, a cooling corpse. His warriors are routed, and soon they shall be scattered and gone from our lands. Please, my darling. Show me a sign you hear me, and rejoice as I do," Xaa rumbled.



Johm'rouh simply sat there on her little stool, staring quietly at the wall.



Eventually, Xaa sat back, and sighed deeply. Merle reached her arms around Xaa from behind as far as they would go, then hugged him tight through his armor, the tears flowing quietly.
