HUGH DONAGHE/DONAHO of Augusta Co., VA
                              A Chronology

                                 Part 1

Hugh's name was most often spelled Donaho from 1752 to 1787, with
the spelling Donaghe preferred after that time. All of the
following spellings can be found in the records, generally earlier
than the 1780s, alhough the spelling Donaghe was found as early as
11 Dec 1760. Since Hugh mostly used Donaghe in his signature for
the last 20 years of his life, that spelling is being used here.

Some have claimed that Hugh was a son of a John Donaghe of
Kelklief, County Down, Ireland but I have seen no reference that
gives that.

Donachy, Donagh, Donagha, Donaghe, Donaghea, Donaghee, Donaghey,
Donaghi, Donagho, Donaghoe, Donaghou, Donague, Donahe, Donahee,

LT = Land Tax, PPT = Personal Property Tax. The Augusta Court used
two ledgers for the Court Order Book #31 in the time period 1809
and 1810. The second they labeled as Vol. 2. The first, although
not given a Vol. number, I have marked as [Vol. 1] to clarify which
record came from which ledger.

Hugh DONAGHE b.c. 1730, [he was sued in court as an adult on 18 Jun
1752] d. 5 Dec 1809 Augusta Co., VA, m(1) possibly 1750 Elizabeth
____ who d. after 28 Sep 1787 Augusta Co. when she last relinquished her dower right in a deed. C. E. May, a History
Professor at Bridgewater College, Bridgewater, Augusta Co., VA, in
his history of Augusta Co., VA, MY AUGUSTA, A Place Not A Woman,
published in 1997, said on page 214, her name was WALKER, but he
gave no reference for this statement. I have found no record to
support it. Mr. May's writings are in the Bridgewater College's
Archives and do not have this information. He is deceased. His
son C. E. May Jr. does not know where his father got this
information.

I have just learned from Bob Donaghe, that his deceased father,
James Jasper Donaghe, researched the family of Hugh for many years.
Bob most generously sent me his father's records, to copy whatever
information I did not have. His father made two trips to Staunton
and found records I could not have ever found. All Donaghe
descendants should show him their appreciation. I wish I could have corresponded with him. I feel that even more information might have been recovered. Most of this information we found
independantly of each other but each of us found very important
details, that affect the interpretation, that the other did not
find.

A part of Hugh's will says, "I direct my Executors to pay each of
my grand children who may be alive at my death except the children
of my son James the sum of fifty pounds so soon as they shall
severally marry or arrive at the age of twenty one years". This
helped to identify grandchildren of Hugh, for whom we have no other
record.

Peter BLAKE/BLEAK/BLEKE. On 18 Mar 1782, Hugh DONAGHE and his
wife Elizabeth sold 232 acres in Augusta Co., to Peter Blake.
Peter and Sarah Blake, on 2 Oct 1789, deeded back, for 5
shillings, this tract of land for which they paid 10 shillings.
   10 shillings was cheap.
Peter went to Greene Co., TN about 1789-90. Sarah probably
died there as Peter returned to Augusta to marry on 2 Sep
1792 Mary McMAHAN, dau. of John McMAHAN and Deborah STOCKTON. I
have Sarah's surname name in quotation marks as I do not know
what name she might have used before marriage. The following
children were listed in the settlement of Hugh's estate as
receiving a grandchild's portion and living at the time Hugh
   died.

We probably will never know who was the mother of Sarah, the
daughter of Hugh Donaghe. Sarah Blake was stated by Hugh to
be his granddaughter, and he said she was the daughter of Peter
Blake. This is in Hugh's deed in Greene Co., TN, of 16 May
1795, where he says that he was Hugh Donaghe of Augusta Co.,
VA, and gives his granddaughter, Sarah Blake, daughter of Peter
Blake, a slave girl. Hugh's first wife Elizabeth was first
mentioned as wife in a deed of 13 Nov 1763 and last mentioned
as relinquishing her dower in a deed on 28 Sep 1787. She does
not relinquish her dower to a deed of 15 Sep 1788. It was
about this time, 1785, that Sarah Blake was born. Her mother
Sarah, might have been born as early as 1755? Hugh mentioned
in his will, one daughter (Elizabeth who m. Robert Campbell)
and two sons, by his first wife Elizabeth. Hugh gives
extensive bequests to his children by his first wife
Elizabeth, and his third wife Anne Usher, and some of their
grandchildren. Sarah Blake's mother is not mentioned by name.
Several grandchildren are given special bequests but all of his
    grandchildren received at least £50.

The occupation or profession of Hugh has not been easy to determine.
He was a dealer in real estate. He was much involved in filing
numerous small law suits in court. Was he a merchant with many
persons not paying their charged debts? None of the court records
ever lists the reason for the debt, only that the suit was supported by documents. In his estate inventory was found numerous
records of bonds and notes owed to Hugh. From all of these and the
suits to collect them, it would seem that Hugh lent money and made
(bail?) bonds for a living. He became very wealthy.

The first Court Minute Book of Augusta Co. that has page numbers is
1754. All of the Court Order books are paged.
